MADISON- The annual Rocket City Marathon run is just around the corner on Saturday, December 11, and those who wish to participate in the 26.2 mile ride around parts of Huntsville, as a beginner or more experienced runner, have the luxury of having expert race coaches see everyone attempting and finishing the race. Fleet Feet of Madison / Huntsville has an updated Marathon and Half Marathon training schedule that will begin Saturday, September 11.
A 14 week program will include training days every Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 7:00 a.m. Meeting venues will be Fleet Feet and additional venues will be named at a later date. The cost of the overall training program is $ 200.
Experienced coaches and mentors, all of whom are Road Runners Club of America certified instructors, will provide the latest and safest instruction with intensities based on fast working times. Experts will provide training on the proper pace, nutrition, fueling and other aspects, all of which are part of preparing for a marathon race.
âIt’s a great way to take the pressure off your workout by having coaches create your plan and workouts, and then calculate custom paces for your speed and training runs,â said Kathy Youngren, director of training for Fleet Feet and one of the trainers programmed for the marathon training program.
The Rocket City Marathon first shot in 1977. The course has seen major changes in running history on two occasions with the final course passing through downtown Huntsville, past homes and sites. historic, to the grounds of US Space and Rocket Center and back to an exciting arrival inside the South Hall of the Von Braun Center.
The event also includes a half marathon as runners head to the back half of the marathon course with a start at 9:00 a.m., two hours after the start of the full marathon. The Fleet Feet training program is also for those who want to run the 13.1 mile distance half marathon only.
Marathon and Half Marathon workouts focus on specific speed workouts and long duration runs mapped in pace groups with mentors. The courses are designed for runners of all experience levels. It doesn’t matter if this is your first of these distances or if you’ve walked the distance before but are looking to improve your time or work out with other fun, like-minded people.
âKnowledgeable and experienced mentors are there to support you to provide invaluable training advice and keep you at your ideal training pace,â said Youngren. “It’s also a great way to meet friends in training.”
