A South African choir performs for local primary school students

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Arts and Lectures hosted a performance today at the Granada Theater in Santa Barbara with a rousing program of South African gospel and spirituals in a variety of languages.

The event featured the three-time Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir of South Africa performing and teaching local students in grades 4-6.

The “Freedom show” taught students about South African history and the civil rights movement.

“The learning curve for them to know South African music and the freedom songs that South Africa said as they went through the apartheid era,” said Shimmy Jiyane, director of the choir. “So we’re grateful to be here and we’re grateful to share our songs with them, especially the kids, because they are the leaders of the future. And we will be for a while.”

Elementary schools from across the city attended the concert.
