Eddie Howe’s training drill in Dubai that left Newcastle players scrambling to avoid forfeit

Footage has emerged from behind the scenes of Newcastle United’s recent training camp in Dubai and provided fascinating insight into Eddie Howe’s approach. The Magpies took advantage of a 16-day respite from Premier League action to fly out for their second warm-weather camp of 2022.

Howe’s side suffered back-to-back defeats before the international break but remain nine points clear of the relegation zone. However, United will need to rack up points from their remaining nine matches to secure their top-flight status ahead of what looks to be another exciting transfer window on Tyneside.

The club have released footage of Newcastle working on the training grounds in Dubai as part of a feature film ‘Mic’d Up’ starring Sean Longstaff. Fans were treated to nearly 20 minutes of action guided by commentary from the academy graduate.

Longstaff interacts with a number of teammates, including Dwight Gayle, Joelinton and Matt Ritchie, as well as being advised twice by assistant head coach Jason Tindall. The team is put to the test with fitness drills, small-scale possession games and attack vs. defense scenarios.

One of the first clips shows the team competing in pairs and tasked with following a set of instructions. Players are eventually asked to pick up the orange or green cone in front of their rival, causing frantic moves to beat their rival.

Footage shows the drill initially confused several players, including Longstaff, before bringing out their respective competitive instincts as they battled to avoid a five-star jumping package. The light exercise was obviously appreciated by the team before work began to reinforce Howe’s tactical message to the team.
