Events planned as Hartlepool joins Dementia Action Week 2022

A series of events and activities will take place in Hartlepool next week to mark Dementia Action Week 2022.

A range of organizations including Hartlepool Borough Council, The Hospital of God and Hartlepool Carers have come together under the umbrella of Dementia Friendly Hartlepool which aims to develop the town as a nationally recognized community.

Events and activities will take place throughout the week, which will run from May 16and-20andand local people are invited to get involved.

Hannah Robertson, coordinator of Dementia Friendly Hartlepool, said: “In the UK, someone develops dementia every three minutes. With the right support and opportunities to stay active, people can continue to live well with dementia.

“We are grateful to all the groups and services involved in the events planned for Dementia Action Week. This is a great opportunity to raise awareness about dementia and promote the range of activities and support available for people with dementia, their families and carers in Hartlepool.

Events/activities include:

  • Forget Me Not Stories and rhymes at community hubs and libraries throughout the week.
  • Celebration Event – ​​Friday the 20thand May, 1-4 p.m.: Explore Dementia Friendly Quiz at Ward Jackson Park with fun gardening activities and games for the whole family, plus live performances by the Blue Rose Choir. For more information contact The Bridge on 01429 868587.
  • Free beauty appointments for carers of people with dementia at the Luminary Salon Hartlepool College of FE, in partnership with Hartlepool Carers. Those registered with Hartlepool Carers can make an appointment by calling 01429 283825. If you are not registered, please contact 01429 283095.
  • Session of the Dementia Friendly Sports Games – Monday 16 May, 12 p.m.-2 p.m.: The Brierton Sports Center will host a multi-sport activity session, designed by the Sport and Physical Activity Participation team, to give people with dementia access to supported multi-sport sports. The session is free for people with dementia and their carers and tea and coffee will also be provided. For more information please call 01429 284864.

Dementia Action Week is a national campaign of the Alzheimer Society to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of people living with dementia across the country. This can be done by supporting local events, fundraising activities to support charities or vital research, or simply by increasing understanding and awareness of dementia.
