Guide to Platinum Jubilee events for all of Shropshire as the nation celebrates

Events are planned across the region to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

The Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee and the nation is preparing to celebrate with events taking place across Shropshire to celebrate Her Majesty’s historic reign.

This year’s Platinum Jubilee marks Queen Elizabeth II’s fourth birthday, after she celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977, her Golden Jubilee in 2002 and her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Below is a list of events running up to the Central Platinum Jubilee Weekend which runs from June 2 to June 5.

Beacon lighting at Telford Town Park – Town Park, Telford, TF3 4EP

A beacon will be lit to mark the Jubilee in Telford City Park.

‘Best of British’ Film Festival – Independent Cinema The Orbit, Wellington, TF1 1BY

The Wellington Orbit will mark the occasion with its own ‘Best of British’ film festival.

From Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June it will screen a collection of films representing the best of the British film industry throughout the period of Her Majesty’s reign – with the films covering themes of royalty, Britishness and of social change in Britain over the past 70 years.

Newport Beacon Lighting Ceremony – St Nicholas Church High St, Newport, TF10 7AY: 9pm

Newport City Council will host a beacon lighting event to mark the occasion.

The event will take place on Thursday, June 2, and will include a Town Crier’s Jubilee Proclamation, as well as a performance by a military wives choir at St. Nicholas Church beginning at 9 p.m.

Summer Fair – All Saint’s Church, Wellington, TF1 1AP

Wellington’s Midsummer Fayre will take place at All Saint’s Church on Saturday June 4, with a royal flavor to mark the historic event.

The village of Westbury will be hosting ‘Westfest 2022’ for the occasion, with the event taking place on Saturday 4th June, with live music, food and loads of family entertainment.

Jubilee Carnival – Welshpool

Welshpool City Council will hold a Jubilee Carnival from midday on Sunday June 5, with people invited to create Jubilee-themed floats for the parade through the town.

RAF Cosford Air Show 2022 – RAF Cosford, WV7 3EX: 8am – 7pm – ticketed event

The RAF Air Show at Cosford will celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a range of activities over the course of the day.

An action-packed six-hour flight show will be featured, including iconic vintage aircraft appearances, show attractions for the whole family, a coronation village where guests can enjoy a pint at the pub, sample treats and join in sing-a-longs and dances with live entertainment throughout the day.
