Police officer accidentally injures himself by gunshot during training in Harwich


A policeman suffered an accidental gunshot wound to his leg during training exercises in Harwich on Wednesday, authorities said.

Harwich Police said via Facebook that the shooting took place around 10:30 a.m. at a shooting range on Depot Road.

“A group of police officers from several different municipalities were undergoing firearms training as part of the Bridge Academy program of the municipal police training committee,” the statement said. “During one of the exercises, an officer accidentally shot in the right leg.”

The officer, whose name and department were not disclosed in the statement, was taken to Cape Cod hospital. Police said the officer was listed in stable condition.

The municipal police training committee will investigate the shooting, Harwich officials said.
