NASA astronaut Janet Kavandi will lead the center.
“Our intention is for Sierra Space to be at the forefront of the commercial space industry,” Kavandi said in a statement. “Our new human spaceflight center and astronaut training academy will pave the way for our company to achieve this – selecting, training and preparing the best space exploration talent to lead the way in this new era of destinations in low Earth orbit. We are excited to begin this effort at Kennedy Space Center during this truly formative stage of the new space economy.
Sierra Space has two main aerospace projects: the Dream Chaser spaceplane, which is expected to be used to resupply the International Space Station starting next year; and the Large Integrated Flexible Environment (LIFE) Habitat, a modular three-story commercial, commercial, and scientific habitation platform.
“The commercialization of space, beginning with low Earth orbit, will require an innovative new approach to selecting, training and preparing the vast numbers of women and men we will need to live and work. in space,” said Sierra Space CEO Tom Vice. said in a statement. “We are really delighted that Dr Kavandi is leading this centre. Janet has an unrivaled level of expertise and experience that uniquely qualifies her for this one-of-a-kind role. She is a former NASA astronaut and scientist, a veteran of three space shuttle missions, and an inductee into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. Janet has also served as Deputy Chief of the NASA Astronaut Office, Director of Flight Crew Operations and Director of NASA’s Glenn Research Center. She will do an incredible job of training and preparing humanity for this next industrial revolution that will occur in space.
