The High Steel Bridge will periodically close for search and rescue training

Submitted by Olympic National Forest

High Steel Bridge will periodically close to all traffic on April 7, 2022, to allow Mason County Fire District #6 to conduct search and rescue training. The bridge that crosses the South Fork Skokomish is located at Forest Service Road 2340 northwest of Shelton, WA. Each year, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office and regional partners respond to search and rescue operations in the South Fork Skokomish Canyon below and adjacent to the bridge.

Forest officials remind the public that the areas surrounding the High Steel Bridge are closed to the public due to the high risk environment including the deep canyon, steep cliffs and fast moving water.

“By using only the High Steel Bridge as a route, visitors can ensure their safety and that of our Mason County partners,” said Susan Beall, Assistant Supervisor of Forestry. “This training helps prepare for incident response, but we expect forest users to obey the closure order and not encroach on the area.

The training enables Mason County No. 6 Fire District to mimic rescue scenarios frequently seen at the High Steel Bridge and perform operations safely.
