Canadian Heritage provided $434,000 in training funds to the Association for Opera in Canada (AOC). Funding comes from the Canadian Performing Arts Worker Resilience Fund (CPAWRF).

AOC will use the funds for the Opera Artist Resilience (OAR) program, creating two short-term programming streams to support paid skill development. The programs are designed to have a high impact in a short-term format.

“Since the onset of the pandemic, AOC has expanded its reach to meet the needs of opera performers, those who are disproportionately impacted the most by cancellations and closures. We are excited to launch the Opera Artist Resilience Program, the newest artist support program, joining other new programs, the Opera Artist Relief Fund, Premium Relief for member artists, the RBC Fellowship/Mentorship Program and the AOC Center supported by the Azrieli Foundation. Artist program, all introduced since March 2020 in response to the pandemic,” said Christina LoewenExecutive Director of the Association for Opera in Canada in a press release.

The funds will support:

  • 225 Mini-mentorships — opportunities to work with an experienced person during one or two meetings;
  • 100 Earn and Learn Internships — paid internships embedded into an existing organization or project.

The details

  • All working opera artists are welcome to apply, regardless of their membership status with the AOC.
  • Either stream offers fees that are tailored to the duration of the opportunity.
  • The program runs by mid-March 2023.

Six organizations from across Canada have pledged to cover just under half of the opportunities offered through the program, including Pacific Opera Victoria (BC), re:Naissance Opera (BC), Manitoba Opera (MB), Opéra de Montreal (QC), Boulev ‘Art Artists’ Management (QC) and Opera on the Avalon (NL).
